I campaign to supermarket chains in Hong Kong since 2000 and push them to join our "No Plastic Bag Day" which now they will NOT provide bags unless $HK0.5 donatioin to charity organisation.
I lobby the government and now HK is going to impose plastic bag levy in 2009 and the legislation already done.
What I want to learn
I want to learn how can I change the NZ supermarkets chains' giving out plastic bag culture by different means from lobby, campaign, education....

Hi Angus,
great to hear from you - awesome work on the campaigning in Wanaka!
The main people active in wellington are Rob, Emma and Kathy though there are a few other people who are happy to lend a hand now and again.
There are a few active people down in Dunedin and a bunch in Auckland as well - the campaign has been starting to pick up momentum in the last few months and 09 is looking promising.
love the idea of doing a survey of supermarkets and releasing comparisons.
I think we nearly have enough people now where we can start to get some central resources (posters, stickers, post cards) printed and start to distribute them around the country and really support the local groups in in running effective campaigns.

Hi Angus, well done with your success in pushing for a levy on plastic bags. I'd be keen to hear more about how you achieved this.
The group I am affiliated with has only just been set up and has not done a lot yet. We were thinking of ways to approach supermarkets, and we understand that some Dunedin supermarkets are managed by Dunedin owners based in the city, however some are managed by a national head office. We think it would be harder to get Dunedin supermarkets to cooperate in introducing a city-wide levy if the company policy-makers are based elsewhere and have the same standards nation-wide.
I would be interestedto find out how you went about introducing the levy. Perhaps you have a webpage you could direct me to, or a few key pointers...?
Thanks a lot,
Celia
